NATIONAL CONSERVATIVE PARTY

National Conservative Party Structure

The aims and objects of the National Conservatives should be defined as follows:

  1. To introduce people through the medium of a mass political movement to political activity, to offer them opportunities for political training, discussion, and work, for political service and leadership and to involve them in the creation of Conservative
  2. To encourage people to play a full part in the activities of their District Ward Branch, Conservative Association and the State and Federal Party by representing vigorously the opinions of their generation and by working for the success of and indeed standing as Conservative candidates in national and state elections.
  3. To provide a medium through which people can play a full part in the affairs of their local community, state and the country by involvement in public life and by service to their fellow citizens. To enable them to contribute to international co-operation.

The regional division is the unit of organisation within the State Conservative Party, and for which there is a separately constituted association. The Conservative organisation works within the framework of the association, the State District Ward branch being the smallest unit. Branches are formed to cover specific areas, and these generally coincide with State polling district boundaries, but State District Wards are invariably combined for the purpose of creating a viable branch. Circumstances may be such that it is considered expedient to have not more than one branch to cover the whole region.

The Conservative State District Ward branches adopt the same objects as their parent association, but the aims and objects are complementary, and not contrary, to the well-established objects of Conservative associations. The objects as suggested in this booklet indicate to Conservatives the job to be done, and this booklet is designed to help existing and future leaders to bring success to their work for the Conservatives.

A somewhat more flexible type of organisation is recommended, and it is considered that the term ‘local group’ may convey a much more accurate idea of what is now envisaged. But whatever form the organisation takes, the objective remains the same, i.e., to provide a means whereby people, who believe in the ideals and principles of the Conservative party, can come together, more often, than not, weekly, so that by political activity and serious discussion then can play their full part in the local branch organisation. Moreover, as the Conservative party organisation is designed to allow the views of all units of the organisation to be conveyed to the leadership of the party, branches or local groups of the Young Conservatives, Conservative Women’s, Trade Union Advisory and Conservative Policy Manifesto Advisory committees have the same opportunity for this as every other section of the party.

Social activities and service to the local community should feature prominently in all Conservative programmes.
